A minimum amount of car insurance is required in most U.S. states in order for drivers to legally operate their vehicle. Insurance is designed to help protect the driver financially if they are involved in an accident that causes injuries or property damage. The average cost of car insurance in the U.S. is $1,674 a year for full coverage, according to 2021 quoted annual premiums from Quadrant Information Services.

However, exact rates vary by driver, household and vehicle make and model. Sportier or more expensive vehicles will naturally cost more to insure, whereas economy cars or special safety features can help reduce risk to insurers and result in cheaper premiums. Keep these factors in mind when shopping for car insurance quotes.

Other car insurance coverage for Mazdas

Although most states only require a minimum amount of liability insurance coverage, many insurance experts recommend purchasing as much liability coverage as you can afford to provide you with greater financial protection in case of a costly loss.

If you finance or lease your Mazda, you may be required to purchase full coverage insurance. Even if you do not finance your new Mazda, you may want to consider these additional coverages when getting quotes or switching carriers. Comprehensive and collision will protect damages sustained to your Mazda:

  • Collision: This coverage will pay to fix or replace your Mazda if you are involved in a collision and it is damaged.
  • Comprehensive: Also known as other-than-collision coverage, comprehensive pays for claims that are not covered under collision insurance. This includes weather events, hitting an animal, broken windows and windshields, theft and vandalism.
  • Gap insurance: This coverage will pay the difference between your claim payout on the book value of your Mazda and your outstanding loan or lease amount, if the Mazda is totaled as part of a claim and the book value is less than what you owe.
  • OEM parts: Some insurance companies offer this optional coverage, which provides OEM Mazda parts rather than aftermarket parts, if your Mazda is damaged as the result of a covered claim.
  • Rental car reimbursement: This optional coverage is a good idea if you do not have access to another car to drive while your Mazda is being fixed after a claim occurred.
