Car show rolls back into action | News

With 139 vehicles judged and a large turnout of spectators, RPM Club’s annual car show

With 139 vehicles judged and a large turnout of spectators, RPM Club’s annual car show successfully returned to action last month at the Swan Lake State Park eastside shelterhouse, according to the club’s president, Kevin Eischeid.

While the number of vehicles resembled the participation in recent years, there were noticeably more spectators, Eischeid said.

He attributed that popularity to people’s eagerness to enjoy activities again after the coronavirus pandemic forced cancelation of so many events last year, including the RPM show. The Saturday, July 24, event was the club’s 17th-annual show.

Spectators kept Hy-Vee food concession busy throughout the day.

“Hy-Vee was worn out at the end of the day,” Eischeid related. “They said, ‘This was great.’ They were just overwhelmed.”

Eischeid said the show’s size was just right for the number of judges available as spectators viewed a wide variety — from rat rods and classic cars to brand-new vehicles.

The two largest vehicle years represented were 1960-69 (13) and 1970-79 (10).

For his part, Eischeid said, vehicles from those years are among his favorite, prompting a lot of fun conversations about good old days.

And Big Daddy Addy deejay played a lot of hit songs from those eras.

“Of course the atmosphere is incredible,” Eischeid said. “It’s such a fun day with our music guy going, and he’s a character himself.”
